Little Dresses for Africa
All About Little Dresses for Africa
Founded in 2008, Little Dresses for Africa is a not for profit charity that strives to send beautiful clothes for vulnerable children across Africa.
The charity was founded in the US, but we work with the wonderful Sarah who is the charities UK ambassador. She's lovely and once your little dresses arrive here with us, we send them on to her and she works to make sure they're sent to worthy communities across Africa.
The pillowcase dresses are hugely appreciated by the communities as items of clothing, however the charity works closely with the communities too. All the dresses are delivered to small and remote villages by groups of volunteers. The charity delivers the dresses to the children and spend time with the residents, building relationships to focus on educating about clean water, assisting with primary education and helping to build community.
The little dresses are always delivered to small villages and distributed alongside a local church or orphanage. The charity always ensures that the villages that are receiving dresses do not have easy access to clothing items, therefore do not negatively affect the local economy or compete will a local business.

How To Get Involved
The Little Dresses charity works entirely on donations of homemade dresses.
We send you beautiful new pillowcases, so we want to encourage you to do something really great with your old ones. All you need is a sewing machine and a spare afternoon, the instructions are made to be simple so whether you're a sewing expert or a complete newbie, everyone can get involved.

Bio Plastics Guidelines
What are bioplastics?
Bioplastics are made wholly or in part from renewable biomass sources such as sugarcane and corn, or from microbe such as yeast. ... Bioplastics made from renewable resources can be naturally recycled by biological processes, thus limiting the use of fossil fuels and protecting the environment.
Assignment:
Explore the process for making bioplastics. So that we can employ sustainable practices, work sessions will be scheduled during class time. This will allow us, as a group, to utilize and not waste materials.
- Each student required to have at least six (6) pieces of bio plastic that demonstrate time and effort with experimenting.
- Each sample should be no smaller than 2" square.
- At least one (1) in-process image.
- Professional images of final solution. Can be individual images or you can arrange solutions in small groups.
Bioplastics are biodegradable materials that come from renewable sources and can be used to reduce the problem of plastic waste that is suffocating the planet and contaminating the environment. Does it make any sense to continue using packaging that can take centuries to disappear to pack products that only last days or months?
Plastic is the third most commonly used petroleum derivative in the world; each year 200 million tons of plastic are consumed on the planet. It comes from a non-renewable source (petroleum), it is contaminating and non-biodegradable (it can take more than 1000 years to decompose).

Cotton and Sustainability
From sourcing certified cotton to promoting agricultural best practice within and beyond our value chain, we work proactively toward increasingly sustainable operations and supply chains, both as LDC and in collaboration with partner organizations such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
LDC has also begun using a ‘diagnostic’ system that applies DNA to determine the purity and quality of some of its cotton.
Developed by Applied DNA Sciences, the technology uses tiny genetic markers that are sprayed on the cotton at the gin just before packaging. The DNA markers bind to the plant’s fibers and act as a microscopic barcode that can be tracked throughout the supply chain.
The labels PimaCott and Homegrown, which are used to brand the cotton that is traced through DNA, are useful for manufacturers, traders and retailers. And if consumers see these labels on a product, they have an absolute guarantee that the cotton used in its manufacture was responsibly sourced and produced.

Sashiko

History:
Sashiko originated about 400 years ago as a means of keeping warm and preserving clothing. In rural, northern Japan, winters were harsh and many people were extremely poor. They relied on producing their own clothing from hemp (cotton was prohibitively expensive for everyday garments) and were restricted from wearing certain colours, so used indigo dye as it was easily grown and was thought to protect against insects.
Putting two or more layers of cloth together and sewing with running stitch creates small pockets of air in the clothing, which trap warmth. Many beautiful, geometric patterns were stitched in undyed thread to create the classic 'cream on blue' look we associate with sashiko today. As well as being beautiful, this was also very practical as women would often stitch sashiko on dark evenings and the contrast meant they could see what they were doing!
Since an item of clothing sometimes had to last for three generations, dense stitching helped preserve the fabric, as well as providing a means of repairing with patches.
Sashiko fell out of favour in the 20th century as Japanese people began to wear Western clothes and did not want to be reminded of how poor their families once were. However, recent years have seen a revival of interest as people around the world have seen sashiko on the internet and want to have a go! In Japan, sashiko has also become more popular as a craft hobby. Interestingly, people in the West tend to want their sashiko to look 'traditional' and usually choose cream thread and indigo fabric, whereas in Japan this looks a bit 'old fashioned', so different coloured fabrics and threads are becoming more popular!

For example, we have shown how our environmentally responsible technology turns discarded garments into new sources of raw material for high-quality fibers.
What is circular economy?
The circular economy is oriented to nature as its role model. In essence, the concept of the circular economy aims to keep raw materials in a closed loop. In this way, resources are maximally used, the need for new ones is reduced, waste is avoided and the life cycle of products is increased. In short, the waste of today becomes the raw material of tomorrow - the same as in nature.
In this way, the circular economy differs from the current economic system i.e. the linear system, in which products are manufactured, used and disposed of.
Recycling textile waste

Visible Mending
Born from the Japanese art of sashiko, visible mending enables crafters to eschew fast fashion and make mistakes beautiful.
Miho Takeuchi, a traditional sashiko instructor and designer born in Japan and based in the United States, tells me via email that sashiko, which developed in poor communities in Japan’s Edo period, “was born from the necessity of mending and patching garments, beddings and household items. In ancient days, clothing and bedding were made from homespun fabrics woven from native fibrous plants such as wisteria and hemp and necessity demanded that this clothing be recycled for as long as possible.” It was only later, she tells me, that the technique evolved to include the elaborate surface-level designs and intricate patterns popular with visible menders today.

While she was a student in architecture, Clarisse Merlet, founder of FabBRICK, notices how much construction is a polluting and energy-intensive industry, so she decides to find a way to built differently , especially with the use of raw material wastes such as plastic bottles, cardboard or plastic cups.
Then, Clarisse figured out that textile industry was poorly considered regarding recycling this material which has relevant properties in the area of construction knowing that cotton is considered as a powerful thermal and acoustic insulator. Then she had the idea of re-using discarded clothes by making it an innovative raw material. Based on the characteristics of the recovered textiles, she designs an ecological building material both thermal and acoustic insulator.
