This work explores early textile techniques mixed with modern fashion trends as a mode of exploration into the complex histories of these dyes and patterns. The dress is a slip style that shows a cascading honeycomb Shibori pattern in indigo dye. Indigo and Shibori have long histories based in Asia and indigo in particular throughout Africa as well. The dress pattern itself does not reflect the cultures it borrows from however, the dye and pattern still embody the techniques, beautifully displaying the agelessness of these beautiful cultural traditions in textiles. Overall the dress becomes a state of fluidity between the past and modernity.

Once dye experiments complete, samples are ironed and some students chose to hem edges. Samples stacked and binder clipped for presentation. 

Students experimented with the following natural dyes:

-Indigo

-Logwood

-Marigold

-Rojo

-Walnut

-Madder 

-Weld

Fabric used:

-Kona Cotton PFD

-A few students experimented with silk.
